On March 26, 2009 MTML hosted the Pathways to Employment and Apprenticeship Forum. With funding from the Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities, this forum brought together over 100 participants from Literacy and Basic Skills Agencies and Employment Ontario Partners to look at partnership opportunities that will help their clients. Read more about some of the partnership presented at the forum below. Brick and Stone Masonry Pre-Apprenticehsip Program: Is a partnership in which candidates attend 4 weeks of pre-employment training provided through Operation Springboard, followed by 8 weeks of level 1 apprenticeship training at the Labourer's International Union of North America, Local 183 Training Centre, followed by a paid training placement. F.O.C.U.S Partnership Program: Finding, Organizing, Challenging, Understanding, Self FOCUS is 6 week employment readiness program delivered in partnership between Lambton College and the county of Lambton Ontario Works Program. Bicycle Assembly and Maintenance (BAM) Project A partnership between the Learning Enrichment Foundation and the Bicycle Trade Association of Canada to meet the demand of Bicycle retailers for skilled bicycle mechanics. The Mill Centre and Calico YED (Youth Entrepreneurial Development) are employment programs directed to at-risk youth between the ages of 16 and 30. The Mill Centre offers carpentry training with a focus on home renovations and Calico YED assists youths in developing and launching small businesses. Centennial College Pre-Apprenticeship for Women in Trades. Specifically targets women interested in the auto industry. Asbestos Abatement Type 3 Pre-Employment Training Program is as part of the Homelessness Partnership Initiative (HPI) and presented by Dixon Hall- Labour Link in partnership with the Downtown East Community Development Collective. Material Handling & Warehouse Occupations: A Partnership Based On Pallets, MicroSkills and the Canadian Supply Chain Sector Council (CSCSC) Career Preparations Partnerships The Literacy and Basic Skills site at Toronto Council Fire Native Cultural Centre, together with Miziwe Biik Aboriginal Employment & Training, offer a carpentry pre-apprenticeship program. Downtown East Community Development Collective supports the creation of local employment for those who face barriers to attaining their work related goals, including those who are homeless or are marginally housed JobStart & the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) Training and General Education Diploma (GED) Preparation Augmented
Education: A partnership between George Brown College Goodwill REACH Real Employment to Achieve Community Health Skills for Change Partnership Models The Learning Centre for Georgina (LCG) Academic Upgrading (AU) Partnership with Seneca College Career Ladders in Health Project. George Brown College with Downtown East Community Develoment Collective. Aboriginal Carpentry Pre-apprenticeship Program involves the Council Fire Literacy program, Miziwe Biik Aboriginal Employment and Training, and George Brown College. |

The 7th Annual MTML Learner's Conference is being held on Thursday, June 11, 2009. Programs can register learners on a first come first served basis beginning May 20th and closing May 26. Volunteers welcome, please contact Katelyn on the LAN line at 416-961-5557.
Literacy Services Plan for Toronto and York Region 2009/2010 The Literacy Services Plan is an outcome of the MTML community planning process,and provides a detailed and comprehensive analysis of the literacy services available across the region; helps to coordinate those literacy services; and provides the Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities with the information they need to provide resources to the literacy field The agency planning pages have been removed from the online version.
