Newcomer Finances Toolkit
08.04.2010. — GlennAn online toolkit for adult language instructors and settlement workers on financial matters has been developed by the Ottawa Community Loan Fund (OCLF).
The kit is called Newcomer Finances Toolkit and topics covered include banking, credit, income tax, insurance, government support programs, investments and fraud. The Kit may be useful for work with some adult literacy learners. It is available on the OCLF website at:

Guys Read

The good news is that research also shows that boys will read — if they are given reading that interests them. Guys Read, is a web-based literacy program for boys. Their mission is to help boys become self-motivated, lifelong readers. The biggest part of their site is the collection of book titles that guys have told them they like. Success Indicators for Independence Goals
08.04.2010. — GlennThis resource is intended to help literacy practitioners capture the successes of learners with independence goals, and link these goals to the essential skills in a way that will give them flexibility and transferability if the learner chooses to pursue a different goal path at a different stage in life.
The “Foundations for Independence” pathway encompasses many goal areas whereas the other transition pathways specifically describe the learner goal (for example, employment or apprenticeship). The Foundations for Independence Framework organizes sub goals along a continuum of personal focus from “home to community” into four broad areas or goal sets: 1) Managing basic needs; 2) Managing health; 3) Managing personal issues and relationships; 4)Participating fully as a member of the community.
This framework is very useful for working with your learners but also for articulating how important Independence goals within the wider context of training and employment. The resource is available by visiting:
