Alexandra Park Neighbourhood Learning Centre (APNLC)

Alexandra Park Neighbourhood Learning Centre (APNLC) is an adult learning centre located in downtown Toronto. APNLC offers a variety of free learning programs including Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) and Academic Upgrading (AU) classes, as well as one-to-one tutoring delivered with the support of volunteer literacy tutors.

These programs offer adult learners the opportunity to upgrade their skills and knowledge to prepare for college programs, apprenticeships and employment. We also support adult learners to become more engaged with their communities and to develop important skills for everyday life.

REGISTRATION PROCESS: Contact us at info@apnlc.org. You will be sent an online assessment to complete which helps us understand your learning goals and decide which learning opportunity is the best fit for you. When you complete the online assessment, a staff person from APNLC will give you a call to talk about next steps.

INTAKE: The programs are ongoing.  

ELIGIBILITY: Adults 19+.  A social insurance number (SIN) is asked for as part of the registration form and in order to be eligible for training supports (e.g. transit tokens or possibly digital devices).  However, if someone does not have a SIN, they are still able to participate in the program, but are not eligible for training supports.

ACCESS: Class and one-to-one tutoring are being done virtually.

Alexandra Park Neighbourhood Learning Centre (APNLC) is offering a free Visual Art Literacy Program that may be of interest to community members you work with. Please feel free to refer anyone who is interested with instructions to contact Natalie (copied here) to sign up. More details are below and attached. 

Calling all art lovers! Alexandra Park Neighbourhood Learning Centre (APNLC) is offering a Visual Art Literacy Program in winter 2024. Participants in this free program will learn about colour, texture and form and practice a variety of painting techniques. In addition, they will explore art history, create an artists' statement, and visit a local gallery. 

The Visual Art Literacy Program is intended for people who have not been able to access arts programming due to financial barriers. APNLC will also prioritize applications from adult learners who have faced barriers to accessing educational and employment opportunities.  As this program is funded by Employment Ontario, participants must have a valid social insurance number (SIN). 

This 9-week program runs on Fridays from 12:00 - 2:00 pm at Scadding Court Community Centre. The next session starts on January 19, 2024. To learn more and register, contact Natalie at natalie@apnlc.org.

AP Youth Development Group Flyer - APNLC.pdf

APNLC is excited to share that we are offering a new program this fall called AP Youth Development Group.   

The program is for youth 18-29 who live in Alexandra Park and surrounding areas who want to connect with each other, find out about health and wellbeing services in the neighbourhood, get help with job search and creating a resume, and much more! The program runs on Monday evenings from 6 – 8 pm at APNLC/Scadding Court.  

Participants in the AP Youth Development Group can access TTC tickets, healthy snacks and other supports with reaching their learning goals. More details can be found in the attached flyer. Please note, because the program is funded by Employment Ontario, participants will be asked to provide a Social Insurance Number (SIN) and complete a registration process.

Alexandra Park Neighbourhood Learning Centre (APNLC) is offering a new program this spring called Garden to Table Food Skills Program. Could you please share with the MTML network? More info is below and attached. 


Garden to Table Food Skills Program is an 8-week literacy and food skills program geared to adults 18+ who want to improve their cooking skills while engaging with others and developing document use, reading, writing, and numeracy skills. Each week, participants attend an in-person class at our community garden plot and kitchen to prepare a healthy dish together.  


The next 8-week program starts on Thursday, May 4.

Soup's On is a 6-week food access and food skills program geared to adults 18+ who want to improve their cooking skills while engaging with others and developing document use, reading, and numeracy skills. Each week, participants attend an in-person class in our community kitchen and make a healthy soup which they can enjoy at home and share with friends, family and neighbours. 


The next 6-week program starts on Monday, January 9. 


Please note: this is an in-person class held at Scadding Court Community Centre. Classes run on Mondays from 1 - 3 pm.
